Biography
James started learning guitar with his grandfather at the age of eight.
At the age of nine he commenced classical guitar lessons with local teacher Stephen Lane.
In 2008 he performed before the Duchess of Kent and Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the prestigious Hallé Orchestra as part of the Future Talent programme.
In June 2008 he successfully auditioned for a place at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester.
Now aged fourteen, he is in his fourth year at Chetham’s where he studies guitar with Wendy Jackson. He also studies lute and piano. In his time at Chetham’s he has experienced master classes from guitarists Craig Ogden, Gary Ryan, Edoardo Catemario and Graham Devine.
James was highly commended in the UK and Ireland national final of the International Lions Clubs Classical Guitar Competition 2010, where he was the youngest participant. At Chetham’s he is part of a guitar duet, quartet and large ensemble.
During his time at Chetham’s he has played in concerts at such venues as Manchester Cathedral and Gorton Monastery.
In the summer of 2010 James attended the Winchester Guitar Festival, and was involved in ensemble work and workshops. He also experienced a masterclass from guitarist Mark Ashford.
James plays a handmade guitar by Juan Hernández in the style of famous 19th century Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres Jurado.
